Addendum!

So it takes me about 4 hours to do ten seconds, that is all 15 steps.

It's going to be a 60 minute film.

24 hours to do a minute

1440 hours to finish the movie.

Do five seconds a day of movie (two hours work).

5 seconds / 3600 seconds = 720 days

Almost two years to finish this, less the 10 minutes I have finished.

600 days to finish the movie. Almost two years. Wee-Hoo!

I guess I need to make a premiere date and try to cram it into that.

We do need to factor in the Jonas element. But that is another day.

Hmmmm.

Clown Versus Monkey: Masterplan #9

SO this morning started the master plan to finish this film. It has been the clicking time bomb in my mind, the nagging pink elephant that wakes me up in the middle of the night and berates me. I can use all sorts of reasonable excuses why the film has been delayed, but none of them allow me to sleep easier. So much has happened in life since I started the film. Again, you start the film as one person, and by the time it is finished, you are someone completely different who barely recognizes the person who started the process. I feel like I'm burying someone with each project, some former version of myself. Making a film sort of destroys you and makes you into someone different. At least it does for me, but my things take years to produce. It is probably me just getting older as I work on this stuff. It is sort of like purging and getting things out of your system so you can go about your life with out these little fixations coloring everything you see.

Alas, here are the numbers:

48 total scenes

14 completed

34 scenes to go

7 easy

9 kinda tough

18 WTF was I thinking, am I a masochist, no really, why!!!!????

So the basic process is this, in basic order, with little stars showing the level of pain.

* 1. place the dialoge - this is done for all the scenes already (easy)

** 2. put characters on the time line - we have all the scenes logged, it is just dragging them over (kinda tough)

** 3. make motion loops for the characters (easy, time consuming)

* 4. place the backgrounds (soooo easy)

** 5. position the characters on the background (kind tough)

** 6. draw the props - 90% are drawn, I keep finding new ones to create (easy, time consuming)

** 7. animate the props (easy, fun, time consuming)

*** 8. chroma the monkeys and clowns (hard, time consuming)

*** 9. chroma the clown patterns (f'n hard, and f'n time consuming, what was I thinking?)

**** 10. making sure the characters kinda interact (really hard)

* 11. add sound effects (easy)

* 12. add music -all music is composed and ready (easy and fun)

** 13. make close ups (kinda tough)

*** 14. add any blood, guts, electricity, visual effect (kinda tough and time consuming)

** 15. compile into a movie - this will actually be the easy part, I'm just going for a visual flow. (kinda tough, time consuming)

*** 16. let it go (hard and time consuming)

So that is about 16 steps per scene, and depending on how many elements, it gets more complicated, the gigs build and the computer goes slower. But at least it seems like something I can do now. I just need to find a way to make the more painful parts (steps 8, 9, 10) less heavy in my mind.

So I'll say 15 steps (dialogue already edited), and so 15 * 34 = 510.

So if I do one step a day, it will only take me a year and a half to finish this. :)

I should have done this math a while ago.

Clowns

So in the creation of this flick, I have been making peace with clowns, all things clowns, and what clowns mean to me. Having always related to monkeys, I had a deep seated distrust of clowns, and never liked being in close proximity to them.

My views have changed.

Why? Having a child can really rip you apart. There is great joy but also terrible worries and stresses and the world tips and turns upside down on a regular basis. My boy Cameron has been undergoing a lot of tests lately for his "weird kid behaviors", and so there is constant blood being drawn, and samples being taken. It is very stressful to him and my wife and I. Sometimes we go to Scottish Rite Children's Hospital to have the tests taken.

This hospital is geared for kids, and it isn't the cold cruel antiseptic world you usually experiance. There are bright colors and gigantic train sets and aquariums everywhere.

Look, I'm not going to be eloquent here. There are some really sick kids out there who are going through some tough stuff. I ran into some clowns at Scottish Rite who were entertaining a little girl who was hooked up to some psychotic monitoring devices and who's legs were bent up, she sat in a big wheelchair, and these two clowns were doing their best to cheer her up.

I'm just saying, the kid broke a smile, and her caregiver said that it was the first time she had seen her smile in months.

MONTHS!

Monkeys, where were you man.

I'm changing charities. If you buy a copy of the movie, the money goes to the organization that provides the performers to these hospitals.

I don't care that hipsters hate clowns (actually I love that), I don't care that Patch Adams was a stupid movie. Don't care. Just don't. Clowns are anarchists. That's what I've learned from working on this movie. Monkey's are all "monkey see monkey do". Sure you get a Gacy every now and then. But I don't care. Don't care. Don't.

10 Things You Must Know About Clown Versus Monkey

1. It's Halloween and the movie is finished!

2. Just kidding.

3. I did my traditional last week of October vacation and locked myself in a small room, ignored telephones, friends, family, and hygiene, and now I am please to announce that I am a whole half scene closer to being finished!

4. Note to self: This is not operating in mind time, but in sticky reality time. Clown Monkey Time goes by a lot faster then People Day Job Time.

5. I spent the week animating baby clowns in an aquarium.

6. Borrowing a new scanner that is like a wand I wave over the pictures and upload them, and then my computer crashes and I drive to Sonic and drink a Pumpkin Pie Milkshake and then fill the empty cup with tears and sadness.

7. I am seeing the film not as a film, but as a slow stream of visuals based on a them that will eventually be collected and arranged in a film and book. But it isn't about the traditional "finishing the movie" How boring. What the hell is a movie anyway? It is about the moments that condensate onto the idea. Like a cold bottle of coke. Coke = Clown Versus Monkey, Updates = wet glass, Finished movie = sponge bath.

8. This whole thing is sort of inspired by the terrible movie Speed Racer, where I sat there going "what a terrible movie" while simultaneously going, "what an awesome series of Trapper Keepers".

Long time coming, but here we go!

1. Firing on all cylinders. Having a great work flow with Jonas Ferreara. I gather the materials and process the layers, and he puts them together and renders them up.

2. I have had some call to arms, still need a sound editor to place sound effects and mess with sound levels. If you have an editing program and would like to through down, let me know!

3, The other missing link is some one to add blood splats and lighting into the shot. Two necessities in life,

4. The dropbox is working like a charm, we are all pulling from the cloud, the project files are in space, making it so much easier then driving footage all over town. FUTURE!

5. Even with the 2 day gigs, now that the kids are in school I have this pristine silence in the morning to process the footage, it is a bizarre feeling.

6. Also, something about the project is just clicking now, the rendering, the workflow, how the characters should move. It wasn't coming together in my head until suddenly, the switch flipped and I understood how it should go. Jonas F. has been invaluable on this.

7. We have two rendered scenes to show, both need some sound tweaks and a prop animated, so expect a preview of those soon.

8. By the way, the motion capture on After Effects is best if you use little ping pong balls with x's on them as tracking points. Other then that it is crap.

9. I gave Jonas his first clown footage this morning!
